This is a beautiful retelling of one of the greatest heroic sagas. The story is familiar to people of all ages but I was amazed at how the author brought the world of the book to life, from the mystery of the intrigues in the court to the tense battles. You get a real feel for how chivalry was practiced and moral conflict is a recurrent theme in the book. The author creates a fantastic sense of good versus evil, not only in the larger plot but in the characters themselves.
The plot is gripping, a genuine thriller. I loved how the many subplots helped to raise the tension and dovetailed nicely into the main plot. The author builds tension beautifully throughout the book. When this is done well, a book becomes hard to put down. The story is told in the first person and you are a Knight of the Round Table on a quest to rescue the Fisher King and the Holy Grail. As a Dan Brown fan, I really enjoyed reading more about the myth behind the Da Vinci Code.
The characters and world of the novel are brought to life so vividly, it reminds me a lot of the kind of detail in the Song of Fire and Ice series. The book is very well written, it moves along at a good pace and the prose flows nicely.
It's rare that I enjoy a book that my teenage children do. My son gave me this book to read and I was pleasantly surprised. Even though we all know the general story, I felt like I was reading it for the first time. This is a real family favourite and I think it would make a fantastic gift for any bookworm.
My family and I thought it a gem. I highly recommend it.
